What are they?
A recent global study found that at least 68 "forever chemicals" were showing up in food packaging. These Chemicals of High Concern (CoHCs) can include BPAs, phthalates, styrene… unfortunately, the list goes on and on. Estimates show that almost 90% of chemicals listed on California’s Proposition 65 — one of the most comprehensive lists of chemicals that are potentially hazardous to human health and the environment — have been used in the petroleum-based plastics industry.
Sounds pretty serious. And it is. Since our inception, a commitment to the principles of Green Chemistry and environment health and safety have been core to who we are at good natured®. And we’re the first people that want to keep things light-hearted, but this topic deserves a bit more precision. It's not enough to use general terms about hazardous materials without explaining exactly what we mean.
So, here's the deets and our commitment to you:
Every single chemical constituent in our material formulations undergoes a rigorous safety assessment in accordance to California’s Proposition 65 and only when confirmed as safe per these regulations is an ingredient used in our products. In addition, our manufacturing processes undergo technical review by process safety experts.
OK, say what? That means the materials we use have been screened against the following regulatory, safety and environmental concerns, including but not limited to:
- Allergens – good natured Products Inc. does not intentionally add allergens such as wheat, gluten, nuts or latex into any ofits sheet rolls or thermoformed packaging.
- Bisphenol A (BPA) – all good natured® branded products and packaging are free from BPAs and no BPAs are intentionally added during our manufacturing processes.
- FDA Compliance – all resins, additives, colorants, coatings and other ingredients used to manufacture good natured® sheet rolls and thermoformed packaging have been approved for food grade applications under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Code of Federal Regulations – 21CFR.
- Ozone Depleting Chemicals – our sheet rolls and thermoformed packaging are manufactured without ozone depleting chemicals listed under the Clean Air Act (CFs & HCFCs).
- Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) – good natured Products Inc. does not use any fluorinated substances in our Bio-PET and PLA material formulations, and no PFA is intentionally added during the manufacturing process.
- Phthalates – good natured® does not use any phthalates in its sheet rolls or thermoformed packaging, nor are these chemicals expected to be present in any of its raw materials.
- Proposition 65 – all good natured® branded products are in compliance with California’s Safe Drinking Water and ToxicEnforcement Act (Proposition 65).
- Reduction of Toxics in Packaging (TPCH); formerly CONEG – all packaging and packaging components sold by good natured Products Inc. comply with the requirements of the toxics in packaging law(s). Specifically:
- We certify that the regulated metals – lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium - were not intentionally added to any good natured® package or packaging component during the manufacturing process.
- We further certify that the sum of the incidental concentration levels of lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium present in any good natured® package or package component does not exceed 100 parts per million by weight.
- We further certify that no materials used to replace the regulated metals are present in a quantity or manner that creates a hazard as great or greater than the hazard created by the regulated metals.
- Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) – our products do not contain any substances listed by REACH as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC).
- Restriction of Hazardous Substances; 2011/65/EU (RoHS) – the following chemicals are not intentionally introduced into any of our products:
- Cadmium (Cd): < 100 ppm
- Lead (Pb): < 1000 ppm
- Mercury (Hg): < 1000 ppm
- Hexavalent Chromium: (Cr VI) < 1000 ppm
- Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB): < 1000 ppm
- Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE): < 1000 ppm
- Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP): < 1000 ppm
- Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP): < 1000 ppm
- Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): < 1000 ppm
- Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP): < 1000 ppm
We refer to the most updated versions of these regulations and lists while developing, formulating and maintaining our products to ensure ongoing compliance.
